Gretta Sweet. Polite. Independent. 1992 (?) - 2005 * Happily, as defined by Gretta, included lots of leash free walks in the woods & on the beach, dogs, dog-people, dog-cookies, squirrels, shank bones, time spent sleeping under my bed and no fireworks ever.			Gretta died July 2, 2005 of an inoperable tumor. more		Gretta was rescued by the all-volunteer Northeast Kingdom Animal Rescue Association from a life (?) tied to a porch. I adopted her from them on October 31, 1994. We lived happily * in Montpelier, VT for six years, traveled across the continent together three times, and survived 4 difficult years in Centralia, WA before we found a home in Bellingham WA where we lived happily * again for 8 months.

My dear darlin’ Gretta girl died July 2 at 1:45 pm. Dr. Colleen Coyne, the
best vet in the world, found a very large tumor in her rectum about a month
earlier. The tumor was so big that surgery was not an option. She gave Gretta
medicine that helped her stay cheerful and relatively comfortable until the
Wednesday before she died, when she began walking very slowly. Knowing that the dreaded 4th of July was coming, the word “Saturday” began to resound in my brain. After a nearly-sleepless night, I called Colleen Thursday morning
and made a home euthanasia appointment for Saturday.

Gretta and I took our last walk Friday morning at Whatcom Falls Park with
my friend Betsy and her two dear girl dogs, Teddy and Shadow. It was a
sweet walk in a beautiful place and Gretta was quietly content to sniff and
trot along with all of us. When we came home, Gretta didn’t want to eat and
when she went to bed, she didn’t want to get up again, nor would she drink
water when I took it to her. Evidently she had decided on Saturday as well.

The procedure was completely gentle and sweet. Colleen sedated Gretta and while we waited for her to nod off, we cried and told dog stories. Gretta's dignity stayed in tact throughout and her nose was nuzzled in my hand when she died.
My hope is that there are plenty of squirrels to chase wherever she has gone.
